An employee is removed from duty because of a DOT violation, such as a positive result on a drug or alcohol screen or a variety of other prohibited conducts.
When an employee is notified of a violation, he or she must obtain an assessment from a qualified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP).
The SAP makes a recommendation based on the findings of the assessment process. The SAP must make a recommendation, such as education or treatment.
The employee must follow through with the SAP’s recommendations. He or she cannot return to safety sensitive duties without the SAP's notification of compliance.
Based on the evaluation, the SAP will report to the employer whether or not the employee has successfully complied with the recommendation.
If the SAP reports successful compliance with the recommendation, the employer will decide whether to arrange for a return-to-duty test for the employee.
An initial evaluation, including an in-depth clinical assessment and treatment recommendations

Tracking of employees through treatment process to ensure compliance and to report progress to employer.
A follow-up evaluation to determine if the employee has complied with the Substance Abuse Professional's recommendations. Final report to the employer, including a follow-up testing schedule, are provided at this point.
